THE PIANO HUTCH APPROACH

I'd like to tell you a little story...

 

 

When I first began teaching piano (way back in 2007), I was working at a small, family-run music school not far from my home.

 

As a newbie teacher starting out, I only had about a handful or so of students. So, every so often, I would fill in for other teachers when they couldn’t teach.

 

I began teaching other teacher’s students and it was at this point that I made a startling discovery.

 

THEY COULDN’T READ!!!

 

Sure they were playing songs, and that's great!!  But if you asked them what notes they were playing, rarely could they tell you.  I began to ponder this. How could they be playing the song, if they couldn’t read the notes?!!  After quite a bit of observation, I came to the following realization.

 

THEY WERE LEARNING SONGS BASED ON HAND POSITION.

 

They knew (or were told) where to put their hands on the piano.  They knew where their thumbs went.  Where to put their second fingers, third fingers (and so on).  Following a tune was like following a simple finger road map. And as long as the song stayed within that 5 finger framework, they could play through it.  This may all seem fine, and the student (and their parents) may be happy, even thrilled, they can play something.  But I soon realized this method was creating a serious problem.

 

IT WAS ONLY A SHORT TERM SOLUTION.

 

As long as the song stayed within that 5 finger framework, they were fine. But the moment the song left that framework, and they had to play a note outside of it, they'd get stuck.  They'd freeze up.  They wouldn’t know what to do. It was as if they had hit a literal musical wall.

 

It was at this point that I realized that something quite essential was missing.  Like an essential tool missing from a tool kit, or a key ingredient missing from a recipe.  And without that essential tool or key ingredient, they would always hit that wall.  Always be stuck within the 5 finger framework, unable to play anything outside of it.

 

I began to rethink how students were learning to play this instrument.  True, they may have been getting faster results. But they were short-term, limiting, and, let's face it, quite thoughtless (you’re pretty much following a 5 finger finger-chart, which, to be quite honest, can only get you but so far).

 

Now, don’t get me wrong, I want students to enjoy their lessons.  I want them to have fun (after all, isn't that why we do it?).  What I don't want, though, is for them to be boxed in, or self-limited in what they can do.  Pretty much, I have one major goal in mind.

 

TO SET THEM UP FOR LONG TERM SUCCESS.

 

So, how can this happen? How can students reap long term benefits, yet still find joy and fulfillment in the process? How can they be set up to play, not only the songs that fall within the 5 finger framework, but those outside of it as well? To be able to play pretty much anything put in front of them, without limit, on their own, for the rest of their lives? Well I’d like to tell you.
